The camera, called CogniSAT-NEI and powered by Ubotica’s SPACE:AI, revolutionises in-orbit imaging for Non-Earth Imaging (NEI) applications onboard satellites. With real-time image capture and onboard Edge-AI processing, it enables satellites to both see and understand their surroundings and to take autonomous actions for the very first time.
The camera has proven its reliability in the harsh space environment, having already successfully flown as part of the Apex “Call to Adventure” mission launched on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 in March 2024. One of the very first images taken, as part of the commissioning process, was a stunning image of southern California’s Baja Peninsula from over 500 km above the Earth.
CogniSAT-NEI: Compact, Cost-Effective and Uniquely Versatile
Utilising commercial components, this camera is a fraction of the cost of bespoke systems like LIDAR, making advanced space capabilities more accessible and cost-effective. The camera system is incredibly light and compact at 136mm (5.35 inches) long x 66mm (2.60 inches) wide x 53mm (2.09 inches) high, and weighing just 350g (12.35 ounces).
The camera’s programmability allows it to adapt to a wide range of missions, offering unparalleled flexibility and supporting live swapping of AI models. For instance, while assisting in the docking process with precise positioning and target recognition, the camera can seamlessly transition to inspect the newly docked satellite, ensuring all systems are intact and operational.
