Empowering Next-Generation Space Situational Awareness Onboard Satellites

Dublin, Ireland – September 17, 2024 — Ubotica, a leader in autonomous SPACE:AI-enabled satellite technology, has successfully deployed and commissioned its intelligent space camera onboard Apex’s “Call to Adventure” mission, advancing a wide range of situational awareness applications in space.

The satellite launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-10 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on March 4th, 2024. During the initial commissioning phase, Ubotica’s CogniSAT-NEI camera captured stunning HD images of Earth, including a breathtaking view of Southern California’s Baja Peninsula from over 500 km above the planet.

Apex is a spacecraft platform manufacturer focused on productizing satellite buses. Their flagship Aries platform, an ESPA-class bus, supports payloads of up to 100 kg. These buses, manufactured at scale, can be configured with various performance packages, enabling Apex customers to reduce development time and costs across diverse mission needs.

CogniSAT-NEI (Non-Earth Imaging) is a productized AI-powered camera for both launch and in-orbit situational awareness. Powered by Ubotica’s SPACE:AI, the camera enables satellites to see and understand their surroundings, and to take autonomous actions to extend lifespan and capabilities. Specific applications include in-orbit threat detection by detecting and avoiding space debris, improved space traffic management through accurate positional data, autonomous docking and navigation, and satellite maintenance and inspection.

Ian Cinnamon, CEO of Apex, commented:
“We were thrilled to deliver a smooth commissioning experience for Ubotica’s SPACE:AI camera shortly after launch, ushering in an era of smarter, more efficient, and more versatile satellites. Apex’s productized satellite buses help companies like Ubotica get to orbit faster on an industry-leading reliable, quality bus platform.”

Fintan Buckley, CEO of Ubotica, added:
“We’re excited to partner with Apex on this mission. Their focus on accessible and efficient satellite technology aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of space applications. Proven now in space, our Intelligent Space Camera demonstrates the transformative impact of AI in enhancing space situational awareness, making space operations safer and more sustainable.”
